What is a kitten?
A kitten is a cat that is in its infancy. Once born, kittens are completely dependent on their mothers for survival, and they usually don't open their eyes until 7 to 10 days after birth. After about two weeks, the kittens rapidly develop and begin to explore the outside world. After another three to four weeks, they begin to eat solid food and grow adult teeth. Kittens are highly social animals and often show an interest in "friendship" relationships with humans.
Kittens require a high-calorie diet, and need to contain more protein than an adult cat's diet. Orphaned kittens need cat milk every 2 to 4 hours, and they need physical stimulation to defecate and urinate. There are milk substitutes that are made to feed kittens, because cow's milk doesn't provide all the nutrients they need.
Kittens raised by humans tend to be affectionate towards humans similar to adult cats and are sometimes more dependent on humans than kittens raised by their mothers, but they can also show change. Rapid mood swings between happy and aggressive. Depending on the age at which the kittens are orphaned and how long they have been without a mother, the kittens may be underweight and may have health problems later in life, such as heart disease. Orphaned kittens' compromised immune systems (due to the lack of natural antibodies found in mother's milk) can make them especially susceptible to infections and make antibiotics necessary.
