Sure to amaze you: the famous Harry Potter font

There is more than one font in the Harry Potter universe. Since the first novel was published in 1997, different fonts have appeared on the covers of different editions in English and other languages. But one of them beat all the others: the one with the special lightning bolt “P”.

The main reason this font is associated with Harry Potter is the fact that it has been used on all the movie posters since the first movie was released. Although the book covers including the font vary from country to country, the presentation of the films is the same globally. Even if you're not a Harry Potter fan, you'll immediately think of the boy with the lightning bolt scar every time you see the signature lightning bolt font "P".

Where did the Harry Potter font come from?

First of all, it's really not a font but a logo specifically designed for Harry Potter - and not for movie posters as one might think.

Lightning first appeared in the United States in 1998 on the cover of Joanne K. Rowling's first novel Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, changed to Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone in the US edition.

The series is distributed by Warner Bros., an American entertainment company. So this is probably why the miracle letter from the US edition of the book is used for marketing. It also appears in newer book editions in other languages.

Where does the word Harry Potter appear?

When the first film in the Harry Potter series was published in 2001, the massive marketing machine was already in motion. Since then, the famous magic word has been used as a symbol throughout the entire Harry Potter universe, including

  • Book cover

  • movie posters, DVDs and Blu-ray discs

  • movie titles in all languages

  • cover of computer and video games

  • soundtrack CD

  • Various goods such as doormats, cups and packages

  • marketing partners such as Lego, Mattel and Hasbro

  • Tours of Warner Bros. studios in London and Hollywood.
