Walmart is currently the largest company in the world. The American retail company generated a staggering $524 billion in revenue in 2019. This number is even more impressive if you consider that Walmart does not operate worldwide. For example, it has a rather thin presence in Europe. But the Arkansas-based company founded by Sam Walton in 1962 is by far the most popular supermarket in the Americas, contributing the bulk of Walmart's half a trillion sales last year. Employing more than 2 million people worldwide, Walmart is also the largest private employer in the world.

Sinopec is the world's second largest company by revenue. China's state-owned oil company is part of both the world's largest producer of refined oil as well as gas. The Beijing-based group has now become the largest oil and gas company in the world. Quite impressive for a company that has only existed since 2000.

State Grid Corporation of China concludes Top 3 among the largest companies today. The Chinese company is of course also state-owned. State Grid is a power company with a monopoly on the Chinese market (this is the world's most populous market). State Grid builds and owns all the power plants and other electrical infrastructure in China. In addition, the company also recently started to invest in many foreign projects.


 

4. Saudi Aramco

Headquartered in Dhahran in the country's Eastern Province, Saudi Aramco is in fact wholly owned and controlled by the government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The current fifth largest company was an Oil and Gas company and another Chinese state-owned company at the time. Beijing-based China National Petroleum Company is significantly older than Sinopec and, at the same time government-owned, is known to be a bit more open to private investors.
