Having used both mics I can tell you there is some difference. Mine is pre 1986 (83 according to the serial number), it has the dual skinned single plate construction, has a battery chamber, and was cleaned and restored to original specs.I wouldnt trade it for any ai mics.This isnt saying that the U87ai isnt a Neumann completely. It is and sounds wonderful.
Since the late 1970s through 2009, all K67/87/870 are marked with a single digit, indicating the last digit of the year of manufacture (i.e. "7" for 1987, 1997, 2007, etc.) The number is either marked with black felt pen or ink on the same ring with other production numbers, but in a separate space, or on the other diaphragm ring with no other markings.

The U 47 fet Collectors Edition is a new edition of this classic, issued in the year 2014. For this, Neumann has resumed production of this classic mic, according to the original production documents and schematics. It is supplied with a high-quality wooden case with sophisticated special packaging, and an individual certificate with the serial number of the microphone.
According to Oliver Archut, the U 47 was first presented at the Berlin Radio Show (Berliner Funkausstellung) in 1947 as a prototype; the first documented commercial sale of the microphone (with serial number 72), according to Klaus Heyne of German Masterworks, occurred in December 1949.[1] 2b1af7f3a8
